Day 1 - To Aachen
High Speed from London St. Pancras viaBrussels to Aachen for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Enjoy the Rhine Valley
Via Cologne, the scenic Rhine Valley route and Stuttgart to Ulm for three nights’ stay.

Day 3 - Narrow gauge steam
We head south on the Friedrichshafen line as far as Warthausen where we find a delightful narrow gauge steam train waiting to take us to Ochsenhausen and back.

Day 4 - The Schwäbische Alb
Free day with opportunity to visit two further preserved lines. The metre gauge Amstetten to Oppingen line usually has steam but the standard gauge Amstetten to Gerstetten route only runs steam on a few selected weekends (Vintage diesel railcar at other times). The lines run through the rolling hills of the Schwäbische Alb. (Timetables for 2008 not available at the time of print.)

Day 5 - Onwards to Dresden
From Ulm to Dresden (four nights).

Day 6 - A railway reborn
The narrow gauge steam line from Freital Hainsberg in the Dresden suburbs to Kurort Kipsdorf was washed away in the disastrous floods of 2002 and is due to reopen in early September 2008. We plan to ride this line, subject to reopening being on schedule. If not, we will visit one of our old favourites, the Cranzahl to Oberwiesenthal steam line.

Day 7 - Explore Dresden
Free day. If you are more interested in old trains than the city, you might like to try the Radebeul to Radeburg steam narrow gauge line (not included in the price of the holiday).

Day 8 - Paddle up the Elbe
Something different for today – we cruise the River Elbe to Bad Schandau on board a paddle steamer and then take an “old timer” tram on the town’s only tram route, a metre gauge line running out into the surrounding countryside. Return to Dresden by train.

Day 9 - Back on the main line
By main line train via Leipzig to Aachen.

Day 10 - Auf Wiedersehen
Leaving Aachen mid morning via Brussels, we arrive St Pancras earlyafternoon.
