2008 |
Join us on one of the longest rail journeys in the
world. The Trans-Mongolian route takes us through
three different countries – Russia, Mongolia and
China – all offering spectacular and unique scenery.
Highlights include Lake Baikal, a night in a
traditional Ger tent and the Great Wall of China.
We present a new way to experience the Trans
Siberian and Trans Mongolian routes. Break the
journey by including four stop-overs of one or two
nights’ duration off the train, to relax and to see
the sights of Siberia and Mongolia. We will travel
on several of the famous trains that traverse this
route and expect to use some or all of the following
- the ‘Rossiya’ (the real Trans Siberian Express),
the ‘Baikal’ Express, the ‘Trans Mongolian,’ and
other long distance trains.

train, ready for an early evening departure.
Day 4 - Yekaterinburg
Evening arrival in Yekaterinburg, the city founded
by Peter the Great in 1723, and famous as being on
the border of Europe and Asia. This is where the
last Tsar and his family were killed. Transfer to
our hotel for the night.
Day 5 - City Tour
Guided tour to include the most beautiful Church of
Alexander Nevsky and the Church of the Ascension.
The city originally developed as a fortress and
gradually became the centre of the Ural Region.
Return to the station for an evening departure.
Day 6 - Into Siberia via Novosibirsk
Our train continues through the marvellous valleys
and across the Steppes. Evening arrival at
Novosibirsk and transfer to hotel.
Day 7 - Trans-Siberian Museum
City tour of Novosibirsk, a surprisingly
sophisticated city, including a visit to
Academgorodok, a powerful scientific complex. We
also visit the Trans-Siberian Railway Museum before
departing on a late evening train.
Day 8 - Onwards to Irkutsk
All day on the train as we travel through the
Kemerovo and Krasnoyarsk Regions before we approach
Irkutsk.
Day 9 - Irkutsk and Lake Baikal
Morning arrival at Irkutsk, considered to be one of
the oldest Siberian cities. The city is the
crossroads of Siberia and the gateway to unique Lake
Baikal. City sightseeing before continuing by road
to Listvianka, in a wonderful location on the shores
of Lake Baikal, for our overnight stay.
Day 10 - The
Mongolian Border
We transfer by road to Irkutsk to join our midday
train departure. We travel by the eastern coastline
of Lake Baikal, through 59 tunnels and over 200
bridges and continue via Ulan Ude situated between
the Khamar-Daban and Ulan-Burgasy mountain ranges.
The train then heads
southwards into Mongolia, the highlight of our
journey.
Day 11 -
Mongolian Ger Tent
Morning arrival in Ulan Bator and transfer by road
to the Terelj National Park. The dramatic Mongolian
landscapes reveal pristine alpine scenery and
diverse flora and fauna. Sample the local cuisine
and stay the night, in a traditional Ger tent.
Day 12 - To
Ulan Bator
By road to Ulan Bator where the city has managed to
preserve its history and culture, despite modern
progress. Visit the Buddhist Temple and the Natural
History Museum which houses the
largest dinosaur skeleton in the world.
Day 13 -
Mongolia to China
We join our final train for the last leg of the
Trans-Mongolian route. Relax on board as we travel
overland to Beijing. The lush green hills give way
to the harshness of the Gobi Desert and we cross the
border at Erlian.
Day 14 -
Arrive Beijing
Views of the Great Wall can be seen as we thread our
way over and around the mountain range north of
Beijing. The descent into the city is quite steep
and parallels the Great Wall much of the way. In
Beijing we tour the Summer Palace before
transferring to our hotel.
Day 15 -
City Tour
This unique city will leave indelible impressions of
the continual contrast between ancient history and
traditions, alongside technology of the 21st
century. We will see the Temple of Heaven and
Tiananmen Square.
Day 16 - The
Great Wall
We visit the Great Wall, stretching over 5,000km
across China’s mountainous northern frontier from
east to west. We also visit the Ming Tombs, the
preserved mausoleum of 13 emperors of the Ming
Dynasty.
Day 17 - Fly
home
We fly to London arriving the same day.
* The tour price is
based on two persons having the exclusive use of a
four-berth, 2nd class compartment. Please expect a
mixture of standards as some trains have recently
been renovated and others are older. All
compartments are similar in size and none have
private facilities or showers. There are clean
European style toilets and washrooms at each end of
every carriage. There is a Restaurant car on every
train we will use.
